  • Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas Tornado Relief

A series of tornadoes tore through parts of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas late Sunday evening. At least 17 people are reported dead, with many more injured and entire neighborhoods destroyed. The first twister created an 80-mile path of destruction, starting about 10 miles west of Little Rock Arkansas. It passed through several towns, including Vilonia and Mayflower, which were devastated. Wind gusts reached up to 160 miles per hour. The storm killed at least 16 people in Arkansas. According to local Nazarene churches, the storms left behind a trail of destruction, including damage to several church buildings. The Vilonia (Arkansas) First Church of the Nazarene’s brand-new building was damaged. The church had just rebuilt after another tornado destroyed its sanctuary and other buildings three years ago. The congregation had worshipped in its new building only twice before yesterday’s tornado hit. Dozens of homes were completely destroyed, including those of several Nazarene families. Kevin Rector, pastor of the nearby Liberty Church of the Nazarene, was among those who lost their homes.arkansas Nazarene Disaster Response staff is currently working with local Nazarene leaders to assess damage and determine long-term response strategies. Immediate needs include shelter, food, water, and clothing for those who lost their homes. Prayer is also needed. “We’re asking for prayer for those who are experiencing grief and trauma. We also ask for prayer and support for local churches as they begin the steps of walking alongside community members on a path toward long-term recovery,” said Larry Bollinger, director of Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. Anyone who wants to support local disaster response efforts is encouraged to give online. “We encourage the church to be the hands and feet of Christ during these difficult times,” said Jay Height, NCM coordinator for the USA/Canada region.

Tornado Hits Oklahoma, Your Help Is Needed Tornadoes touched down in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Iowa on Sunday and Monday May 20th doing the most damage as they ripped through the Oklahoma cities of Shawnee and Moore, suburbs of Oklahoma City. A continued tornado warning is being issued for much of the Midwest. The tornado that tore through Shawnee destroyed a mobile home park and left two elderly men dead and an estimated 29 injured. The death and destruction of Monday’s two-mile wide tornado that beat a path through Moore remains to be seen though news reports suggest that as many as 24 children have lost their lives at a Moore, Oklahoma elementary school. It is estimated that 171,000 people lived within the path of the storm. Aerial footage shows homes in rubble and cars overturned. Early reports confirm that two elementary schools have been severely damaged. Nazarenes on the ground are already assessing disaster response strategies as they work to get in contact with the pastor from the Moore Church of the Nazarene, located about two miles from the destruction zone. District Superintendent Jim Cooper says that the church wants to be a part of any relief effort to the hundreds without homes, clothing, and resources. He says that there are probably some from the church whose children attended the two damaged elementary schools. As the tornado watch continues, we ask you to pray for those whose livelihoods have already been destroyed and those still under threat. Give to the relief efforts online here or by sending in a check.Help in this time of need by clicking here
